Legendary Dog-Killing Maine Beast Slain?

, ,

A September 18, 2004 Lewiston Sun Journal article by Mark LaFlamme quotes reports going back to 1991 of a hyena-like creature in the woods of Androscoggin County, Maine, repulsive in appearance, making an unearthly howl, and powerful enough to kill large dogs.

In the darkness before dawn on a cool autumn morning, Martha David and her husband were wakened by the scream of a beast. The shriek rose from outside their bedroom window, and all but paralyzed the couple in their bed.

“It sent a chill up my spine. There was a creature out there and it was making a sound I can’t describe as earthly,” said the 59-year-old David. “We were too terrified to get up and go see what it was.”

It was Litchfield in 1991. The Davids never found out what lurked outside their mobile home. They sold the place soon after and moved to Minot.

Thirteen years later, dozens of people say they have recently seen or heard an unidentifiable creature in area woods. It began in mid-August when a Wales man reported that an unknown animal crept out of the woods behind his house and mauled his Doberman pinscher.

The animal that killed Duchess the Doberman was never identified.

Since that attack, people from Wales, Litchfield, Sabattus, Greene, Turner, Lewiston and Auburn have come forward to speak of a mystery creature.

What is it?

“I was out on the deck having a cigarette and coffee when this thing came up over the bank,” said 70-year-old Leo Doyon, who lives on Perkins Ridge Road in Auburn. “I said, ‘What the hell is this?’”

Doyon has been hunting in the Maine woods for more than 50 years. He thought he had seen all animals great and small until the middle of August. The creature that emerged in his yard was nothing he could identify.

“It was no wolf. It sure as hell wasn’t a fisher and it wasn’t a coy dog,” Doyon said. “To tell you the truth, I don’t know what it was.”

An animal control officer spotted the creature along Sawyer Road in Greene. Despite his experience with critters, he could not identify it. He could only say that it looked like a hyena, just as more than a dozen others have described it.

Another dog attacked was reported in the same paper, November 18, 2005, quoted in Cryptozoo News.

Further discussion ensued.

AP reports that a mystery animal was killed last Saturday along Route 4 by an automobile while chasing a cat bearing a striking resemblance to the animal described in previous accounts.

Residents are wondering if an animal found dead over the weekend may be the mysterious creature that has mauled dogs, frightened residents and been the subject of local legend for half a generation.

The animal was found near power lines along Route 4 on Saturday, apparently struck by a car while chasing a cat. The carcass was photographed and inspected by several people who live in the area, but nobody is sure exactly what it is.

Michelle O’Donnell of Turner spotted the animal near her yard about a week before it was killed. She called it a “hybrid mutant of something.”

“It was evil, evil looking. And it had a horrible stench I will never forget,” she told the Sun Journal of Lewiston. “We locked eyes for a few seconds and then it took off. I’ve lived in Maine my whole life and I’ve never seen anything like it.”

For the past 15 years, residents across Androscoggin County have reported seeing and hearing a mysterious animal with chilling monstrous cries and eyes that glow in the night. The animal has been blamed for attacking and killing a Doberman pinscher and a Rottweiler the past couple of years.

People from Litchfield, Sabattus, Greene, Turner, Lewiston and Auburn have come forward to speak of a mystery monster that roams the woods. Nobody knows for sure what it is, and theories have ranged from a hyena or dingo to a fisher or coydog, an offspring of a coyote and a wild dog.

Now, people are asking if the mystery beast and the animal killed over the weekend are one and the same.

Wildlife officials and animal control officers declined to go to Turner to examine the remains. By Tuesday, the carcass had been picked clean by vultures and there was not much left of the dead animal.

Loren Coleman, a Portland author and cryptozoologist, said it’s unlikely that the animal was anybody’s pet.

After reviewing photos of the carcass, Coleman said he was bothered by the animal’s ears and snout. It reminded him of a case years ago in northern Maine in which an animal shot by a hunter could not be identified. In the end, wildlife officials got a DNA analysis that showed the animal was a rare wolf-dog hybrid, he said.

Mike O’Donnell, who is married to Michelle O’Donnell, said the animal looked “half-rodent, half-dog” to him.

It was charcoal gray, weighed between 40 and 50 pounds and had a bushy tail, a short snout, short ears and curled fangs hanging over its lips, he said. It looked like “something out of a Stephen King story.”

“This is something I’ve never seen before. It’s an evil-looking thing,” he said.

It looks like a dog to me, an ugly dog, but a dog. Still, I do think the state wildlife people should have taken the trouble to go out there, and collected some DNA samples, just for the record.

This dog appears to be a type of wolf-chow or a.k.a. eurasier.
This website gives a little history and photos.

I don’t think this animal is the legendary monster. To me it just looks like a dog, and definetly not strong enough to kill a Dobermen!

Mark

Dobermans are notoriously lacking in heart and fight. That’s why you never see them in police work. I don’t think from the looks of that thing’s head that it would have any trouble killing one! It’s not the size of the dog in the fight. It’s the size of the fight in the dog…or whatever the hell that is.

Anthony

For the record I would like to say that it was not the “GameWardens” job to go and investigate this dog like creature. The creature was dead so it was no threat and no laws were broken. If someone wanted the animal to be checked out they could have notified a bioligist.

Anthony

In the full body picture it looks like a deer in the rear. An the head and the body looks to small to kill a doberman. Like Mark said some dogs are more agressive but I dont think a Doberman would be killed by a dog that size without both dogs dying unless the doberman was old or the creature had a disease. How long was the doberman dead before it was found?

Jon

it looks nothing like a eurasier! its a werewolf!! and im gonna be the first to find another one and let it bite me so i can have cool lycanthrope powers! beware the moon david!

Chris G.

Definately, it’s a spray-painted deer/coyote mix – black rustolium to be exact!

Lorenzo

it’s a chupacrabra… you infidels! pwaha…ha… what? you don’t think so..
com’on… it could be? .. look at it’s eyes dude… chupacabra doesn’t have to be two legged pfft.

Lorenzo

BAHAHaha …. this comment space is such a joke.. anyone can get accepted HAhahaHAha… sigh…chupacabra w0o0o0o0o0o

JESUS CHRIST IT’S MY EX-GIRLFRIEND!

No, just kidding, this poor animal couldn’t be as much of a whore or as wretched and blood thirsty . Whatever the hell this monkey-dog-deer-skunk beast is, it sure is odd looking.

lethanief

ah i dont know, but remember about the wildlife aislated, perhaps its a specimen of a group of nocturnal creatures…or, please is weird but is only a theory: remember the lycantropes, the more low and weaks are mere wolfs, ok ok is weird but think about, perhaps the beast could be a rare especimen of a wolf whit something else…sorry im not good writing on english

amy

So it’s a funny looking dog, but a dog nonetheless. . I think people are making a huge deal out of nothing. Has anybody ever looked at the picture of the “ugliest dog in the world” on the internet? I mean, nobody is calling experts in to take DNA tests there. . and I don’t think he looks evil at all. . take a look at the eyes. . just look at them for a second. They make me think of sadness and lonliness.

Dee

Haven’t any of the se people who live in that area–ever seen a chow-mix before?? That is just what this dog looks like–and yes, it IS a dog. I have a friend who owned a chow-mix dog years ago-and the face looked very much like this. Not flat like a purebred-but sort of “half’ flattened. Some idiot human abandoned the poor animal, and of course it’s going to look “wild” and “smell bad”, living out there in the woods, trying to find a way to survive. Really-stop with the wild stories. This is simply a tragically sad end to an abandoned dog’s life…

Makenzie

Ok..honestly you have to stop!
It did not chose to be born this way
and most if not all of you are basing
it on apperance. Thats cruel.
Its dead, its obviously not going to
look appealing, do you know what it
looks like alive? Probably not. So stop
basing it on apperance.
And also saying its your ex girlfriend
how low can you get..

Al

Did we forget that Dogs and Cats are disposable? When I was growing up, If your pet got sick you didn’t take it to the Vet. If it died you throw it out or bury it and get another.
All you sensitive people are getting scammed by corporate entities. Insurance for animals, pet nursing homes .BwaaaaaHaaaaahaaaaaahaaaaa! What a scam!

See, folks give them all these rights and now look, they are doing home invations!

Samus

My dog is missing. It’s black and has a short snout. It’s a really ugly dog ( srry, no offence skippy ) and sort of looks like a chow mix dog. Does anyone know where it could be. I live on the border of New Hammshire. It could be anywhere! I hope its not in Canada, hey.

Lauren J.M.

It is either a hybrid dog( abandoned ), the “Chupacabra”, or some kind of Maine- Mauling-Dog!!
If it was a regular dog, I feel really bad for it…it must have been abandoned by one of those stupid rich snob dog breeders. If they don’t like the puppy’s looks, they just throw then away like TRASH!!!!!!!!!!!!I HATE THEM!If my dad would let me get a dog, I’d SOOOO get that one.I wish a world of HURT on them!!!!!!!!!!And I would say alot of other things…But my mom would kill me for saying those words!

parent

it looks like a mix breed of some sort but it dosnt look like it could take a dobermen its weird that this creature has only showed up here and montana be cause it would have to cover hundreds of miles which means that is could be genetic mutate or a mistake of breed but anyways if there are more of these i think people should keep a eye out in case if the attacks start to take place again
we should get someone up here to check on it

denise

Oh my Lord! My husband and I saw this because our dogs were barking. We were wondering what it was because it look like a big cat or a wolf with rounded ears and a flat snout. The next morning our horse Buck was dead! We were just searching the internet under “ugly dog” and this came up! Oh my gosh I am scared!

Ann

This looks just like my Chow/Lab mix. Same length in muzzle same color fur same bushy tail The only differents is my my baby boy has button ear not pricked ears and the . Be it ugly or not its a Canine. I think it is cute because it reminds me of my dog.

i saw this on TV yesterday on discovery and some of the info here is a lil off, the killed doberman had nothing to do with this spicific body found, that was another case in witch the dog wasnt killed, just hurt and the man saw this “wolf like dog” on his door step trying to get in his house at about 3am he was comming home from work. the picture you see her was taken by a woman, the day after she saw this “thing” run through her back yard. she found its body the next day and she took pics of it and called some animal unit. a dog named FeeFee was killed by this “thing” it was a ChaWawa they never found the dogs body or this “thing” the pic is real thats 100% true but its prolly just a feral hybread dog =/

Megan

I am no expert, but the way I see it, based on the length of body vs the length of leg, the type of fur on the tail, and the shape of the head, I would say it is a fox/dog hybrid. If a Chow or a retriever mixed with the fox population (rare but possible) it would turn out looking similar. I think that this would explain the sound too, a combination of a fox bark and a dog howl could be a very weird sound. Animals like that, part wild and part domestic, are more likely to have mental problems, leading them to attack. It doesn’t matter the breed or relative size of the animal, if one dog wants to hurt another bad enough, they’ll do it, despite injuries taken on their part. I have personally seen a chocolate lab take an american bull dog to the ground and take three people to pull him off.

Matt West

Dame This Thing Is UGLY!!!!!!!! LOL

Kassi

I personally think it looks like a Schipperke, look them up… It may be a mix. But I have a Schipperke and that is what it looks like but the snout is different and my schipperke is most likely much smaller.
and I think it is very sad…. I just saw the thing about it on the history channel.

SEAN "G"

It looks….well……..like Rosie O’Donnell.
(P.S. I’m NEVER NEVER EVER moving to Maine, it scares the crap outa me – Stevie King can keep it – BOO)

Simba

Some of you need to go back to grammar school and learn how to spell.

Examples:

“Dobermen”
“bioligist”
“definately”

Ryan

damn people you really think this was someones pet, well then you must have some messed up pets out east. this thing is definately i wild dog hybrid, by that i mean either wolf or coyote. i dunno what its mixed with but that is what it is. the eyes supposedly glowing in the dark, have any of you gone coyote hunting. if you have the right amount of moon light there eyes will glow on there own to. as for the noises, have any of you actually heard a true coydog????Apparently not they have the weirdest sounding yelps in the world. it at times sends a chill up ur spine. now i know y live in colorado now, because you people “cry wolf” or “monster” to much. this thing is a more wild coydog thats it.

Ryan

Please disregard what i had said earlier. just looking into this ever so slightly i had found some similarities to some different animals. yes it was the size of a dog roughly. it had a short snout with “fangs” curling down over the lower lip, supposedly. strange hind leg structures. well you take all of this into account, and the only thing that i can come up with that fits this is a canine wolverine mix. now i have no idea how that would be possible but that is the only logical answer that i can come up, i advise everyone looking at this site and story to do a simple google images search of wolverines and combine that with a dog in your mind and then compare that to this creature above. i think you will agree with me.

lydia

my firend has one of those in her backyard she calls it a monster

lydia

she said it would eat her cat then i saw it it WAS a monster!!!!!!!!!

lydia

its me it looks the same to me

paul

that looks like a dog but i belive there is something else out there that is killing animals and if not stoped could kill children

jon

Has no one ever heard of cross breeding, like a horse and donkey make a mule. a tiger and lion make a liger. all it is is a dodog that cross bred with some other canine species. And the “creepy” howling it make’s might just be from the shape of its snout or something in its throat.

Mr. Hyde

I work at a wolf center in Minnesota and we have 2 wolf/dog hybrids so i know that this is definitely NOT one. It’s not a coydog either as i have property up north and have seen then a thousand times over. And it just isn’t possible for a dog and a wolverine to have an offspring. It’s most likely a common type of dog. I know of a species of dog that looks just like this i just can’t think of the name.

joselito

it looks like a human just look at the teeth

Ronny

Err umm i know that teeth is human teeth but it not look wolf to me or dog that eye look normal eye i guess it was werewolf but im wrong it could be hybrid wolf/coyote/dog mix up with human dna i think it was accident over-crossing it can be dead easy but i don’t think so it can. sorry im not good at english im deaf i only use asl(America Sign Language

Moonshadow

Wooooooo000ooooow =D creepy thing & if it was a werewolf it’d beeeee WAY bigger! i mean aren’t u ppl smart !!!

Moonshadow

Ppl i live in Topsfield Maine not scarey trust me well…..if ya go outside at dark well ur imagination kinda goes wild and sometimes its real………..=( / =D

Selena

Come on people. It was just a mixed breed dog. Whether it was a hybrid or not doesn’t matter. The poor thing is dead. It was obviously suffering from poor nutrition and medical care, and since no one claimed it as a missing pet, we can only assume it was feral. I have seen some pretty crazy looking mixed breeds and this looks fairly normal to me. Have you ever seen a Chinese Crested with an underbite? Looks scarier than this. Let the creature rest in peace.

Unknown

it looks like a sad little dog

John in New York

It’s a Japanese AKITA fighting dog. they are very fierce, powerful and kill other dogs. Photos of others here:

http://japanesedogs.bulldoginformation.com/kai-inu.html

Don’t mention it!

sammy

i thinks chupcbra it looks one . i didn’t it could have kill doberman or rottiweiler .it could been something else it killed dogs and livestock . or its dogs that was lost and was shoot by someone thinking its was creature.
.

Brittany

I think it is a chow mix, as many have said. Chows tend to be aggressive due to their original use as food; they lack the intelligence to regulate their temperament as other dogs may. I’ve nearly been attacked by a chow while walking my 156 (all muscle) lb Rottweiler. It wouldn’t surprise me if this “beast” is the culprit for the attacks.
